NEW DELHI: An ugly on-field confrontation between Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina towards the closing stages of the tri-series match against West Indies on Friday marred India'ssplendid 102-run win.

According to a TV channel, the genesis of the argument - which very nearly descended into a physical altercation - lay in two dropped catches off Jadeja's bowling even as the Windies' ninth-wicket pair of Sunil Narine and Kemar Roachwas putting up a dogged fight. Both Raina and Jadeja, incidentally, play for the same IPL team - Chennai Super Kings.

Raina was involved in both dropped catches. The first one was in the 25th over at slip as the ball ricocheted off Roach's bat and Dinesh Karthik's gloves and went past Raina, who appeared to be celebrating, thinking the ball had already been caught by the keeper.

The second instance was when an already-incensed Jadeja appeared to lose his cool. In the 32nd over, both Raina and Bhuvneshwar Kumarcalled for the catch as Narine played a lifted shot towards long on, but a miscommunication resulted in the catch being floored. Narine followed that with a six to add insult to injury.

Jadeja didn't say a word then but after he had bagged Narine's wicket off the fifth ball of the 34th over - the last of the innings - things turned ugly. During the break, Jadeja confronted Raina and the two were seen arguing till they were separated by skipper Virat Kohli. Raina appeared to be explaining the situation to Jadeja, who appeared in no mood to hear him out.

That wasn't the end of it, though. After Jadeja dismissed Roach off the very next ball to bring about India's win, there was another heated exchange as Jadeja vented his anger and teammates looked on helplessly.

Apparently provoked by a verbal volley from Raina, the two argued till Jadeja walked away from Raina, who then grabbed him by the neck - in an almost threatening fashion - and gave him a piece of his mind.

Eventually the two Chennai Super Kings players walked off the field together in a conciliatory gesture but the disciplinary breach had already soured an otherwise excellent performance from the team
